I think most people just leave wifi on; constantly turning it off and on is annoying, and you get better GPS when it's on.

Friendly pedantic clarification: you get better
location
accuracy when WiFi is on by combining access point location databases with the GPS signal.

While I
was
using "GPS" as shorthand for "automatically determined location", technically doesn't the GPS receiver work better/faster when your phone already has a rough idea where you are?
