Yeah, a blog isn't just a place to quickly jot things down, it's actually work. And because it's work, and it's optional, you sort of have to feel like it's "the work you should be doing," or at least part of or ancillary to, "the work you should be doing," or else it will just feel like busywork, and/or get postponed indefinitely. Posting on an existing platform is lower-stakes. But then again, if you end up putting lots of effort into posts on an existing platform, you're still doing most of the work, and one could infer that you care about it at least that much. In those cases I would recommend doing the initial setup of an actual blog etc., which is just a one-time operation pretty much.
Just out of curiosity, do you happen to have or have had a blog?
Also, I think part of the problem for me is that I think no-one would would read it anyway, which, depending on how you look at it, can both be an incentive or a disincentive. But sometimes I also think about it as some sort of conversation starter or tool to help me foster conversations. The idea would be to write about some things I happen to talk about with different people every now and then, so that when I happen to talk about it again, I can point them to what I wrote as a summary of my opinions as some sort of starting point for the discussion.
Yep, you can put me in the "used to have a blog" category! Toward the end I just got busy on other things and drifted away from it. Been thinking about starting up again lately though, which is why all of this stuff is top-of-mind. I definitely hear you on the "no-one would read it" fears. There's an awful lot of chatter out there, an ocean of it. So it helps (just to flog my earlier point again) if it's part of what you think of as your life's work. But even if only a few friends read it, maybe that's okay too. I never really thought of my own blog as being super important, but it did connect me with a few people.
