Note that despite being the OP, I would like to attract attention to the harm of purity thinking. AV1 is legitimizing in the head of the dangerous dogmatic thinkers (e.g. browsers) the non support for h265, which incurs a doubling of size on current videos which dramatically reduce user experience and more importantly, incurs an extremely consequent ecological cost and therefore, those proponents are responsible for many deaths because patents bad. As a reminder a lifetime license of h265 cost a symbolic dollar. But that is not my main point, my main point is that h266 was released a year ago and no browser supports it. I don't see signals of browsers adopting it in the future. Again much more harm made by the mere existence of the much inferior AV1. I hope AV2 will come soon and be on par but I don't have high expectations. Also the same applies for you know this concept called images. JPEG XL and AVIF are inferior to a HEIF updated for h266, except nobody has created such a codec.. If there's any fabrice bellard in the comments, I hope you know see the missed opportunity of making the best image compression algorithm of the world via a naive h266 port, like was done for heif and bellard's version
