“Portugal is a nation of people who don’t actually tell the truth.” (twitter.com/eastdakota)

I'm surprised the CEO of Cloudflare would say something like this. It's bad PR and bad for hiring, I agree.

There are some cultures where lying and cheating is seen as being "cunning" rather than immoral. I don't know if Portugal counts among these.

Even in those countries, where lying/cheating is normalized, being caught lying/cheating is still considered shameful.

There's no version of a major IT company CEO calling a country "a nation of liars" that ends well.

Well, 99.9% of Cloudfare customers will never hear of this, and out of the 0.01% that do, maybe 3 will look to move their business elsewhere. It’s the sad nature of business these days, either we don’t care or we don’t have good alternatives.

But his statement is shameful.

Cloudflare customers may not, but what about board members, investors and shareholders? They might not be too happy with a CEO who shows such bad judgement.

Left unsaid are what exactly Cloudflare thinks are "Good, technical, high-paying jobs", 100 of them. A development team for a new product? Red teams to search for Heartbleed-like bugs? Coders to introduce the NSA backdoors?

Portugal (and many other countries) is filled with promises of foreign companies lobbying for subsidies to open "excellence centers" that turn out to be glorified call centers hiring for the minimum wage.
