Now that I think about it: Animoji may have been a justification for the sensor array as in "look, multiple purposes".

Definitely not dead. iOS 13 is adding new Animoji characters along with more customizable Memoji features. Plus the ability to use Memoji stickers across a variety of services, rather than just through iMessage.
